Electromagnets. - In an electromagnetic chuck, the chuck face or superface consists of adjacent bars b of opposite polarity with lateral extensions c at intervals beneath the operative face, which abut against similar extensions on alternate bars of similar polarity, the widened parts forming an underface with the poles at right-angles to the poles on the top face. The underface poles are secured upon the cores d of the chuck base a, magnetizing coils e being provided on the cores. The complete face is then formed into a solid element by running non-magnetic material, for example, brass, between the poles. In the case of a circular chuck, the poles are radial, the cores in the base being arranged as concentric rings.
