Abstract
294,026. Strunk, E., and Reppman, A. Oct. 12. 1927. Roots.-In a furnace roof formed of blocks which are individually suspended by hangers from overhead supports, the opposite faces of the blocks are curved so that they exert a mutual wedging action. When the blocks are to be withdrawn upwards as shown in Fig. 1, the curves should be so struck that of all the normals within a block to the concave side, that drawn through the uppermost point B is the longest, and this may be effected by striking curves of the same radius from points on or above a continuation of the line AB. The blocks may be staggered, or may be arranged in opposite directions in adjacent rows, and their plane faces may be either normal or inclined to the plane of the roof. The suspending device comprises a dovetail clamp 3 removably connected to a hooked hanger bar 5 having a set-screw 9 by which the position of the block can be adjusted. The connection between the clamps and the hanger bars is made by non- circular pins 4 in the clamps and correspondingly formed holes in the bars. A pair of blocks may be held in a single clamp. Curved roofs, or curved portions of a roof, may be formed by varying the wedge formation of the blocks by reversing blocks of the same shape as those used for a flat portion. When the roof is curved two or more rows of blocks may be carried by a single overhead support, or they may be adjustably supported, as shown in Fig. 8, by threaded stems 11 and nuts 13 from a curved member 12.
