Abstract
293,307. Gobereau, R. R., and Maujole, L. E. July 2, 1927, [Convention date]. Screw propellers. - In a variable pitch propeller, the angle of inclination of the blades is automatically adjusted through the action of centrifugal masses mounted on the supports of the blades. The blades 3, 3' are mounted to turn in a support 1 loosely mounted on the shaft'2 of the engine on which is keyed a carrier 4 which is connected by a pin and slot connection with masses 6, 6<1>, the axes of which turn on axes 7, 7' working in the support 1. The carrier 4 is also provided with arms 10' which engage with arms 11, 11', fixed to the axes of the blades 3, 3<1>. This arrangement ensures the alteration of the pitch of the blades in accordance with the movement of the masses 6, 6<1> under centrifugal forces. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the centrifugal masses 6 rotate about axes 7, whilst the carrier 16 is provided with arms 18, 18<1> which form bearings and support axes 19 on which pivot blocks 20 which slide in grooves 21 carried by arms 5, 5<1> pivoted on the axes 7. The centrifugal masses are also provided with dash-pots to damp the adjustments of the pitch comprising cylinders 23, 23<1> in which work coins 25 keyed on the axes 7. The cam carries helicoided steps 28<1> which, when the axis 7 rotate, screw themselves on the fixed steps 31, 32. The axis 7 is provided with channels 33, 34 which establish communication between the two faces of the cam and thus allows liquid to be forced from one side to the other when the movement of the cam takes place.
