Benzoquinone dyes.-By heating with aqueous alkali, chloranil or bromanil is hydrolyzed giving the insoluble alkali 2: 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dichlorbenzoquinone or alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dibrombenzoquinone, and a dyestuff dyeing wool and silk brown tints which may be precipitated with acid or by salting out. Products soluble in alkali are also obtained by heating choranil with alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3-6-dichlorbenzoquinone or with alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dibrombenzoquinone. Similar products are obtained starting with bromanil instead of chloranil. By heating with water, alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dichlorbenzoquinone or alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dibrombenzoquinone yields a brown dyestuff which may be precipitated by means of hydrochloric acid. Instead of heating the alkali 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dichlor (or dibrom) benzoquinones alone with water they may be heated with the alkali-free dichlor- or dibromdihydroxybenzoquinones. An example is given in which 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6-dibrombenzoquinone is boiled with sodium 2 : 5-dihydroxy-3 : 6- dichlorbenzoquinone.
