Abstract

Transformers. - In cooling transformer windings by immersion in a liquid, circulation of the latter is assisted by positive means disposed within the transformer casing. In one form of the invention, Fig. 1, the casing a of an oilcooled transformer b is provided at either the upper or lower end with a. diaphragm d forming an end chamber with which external cooling tubes c communicate. This chamber is also in communication with the main body of the casing by an aperture f in the diaphragm in which is disposed a motor-driven impeller h for circulating the oil. The motor i is disposed inside the casing, and may be connected to the transformer winding on a part thereof, or to a separate auxiliary winding on the transformer core. In an alternative form, Fig. 2, the impeller h is disposed in a chamber k having inlet and outlet tubes kl, k-' arranged so that oil is withdrawn from the space immediately above the transformer and discharged over baffles m into the cooling tubes, the remainder of the oil being subject to thermo-syphon circulation only.
