Abstract

292,851. Edkins, B., and Brown, F. G. Dec. 9, 1927. Lubricant c o n - veyed by fluid; liquid level, maintaining.- In a lubricating device for internalcombustion engines comprising an oil vessel 1 having an air inlet tube 12 depending into the oil, the air space above the oil having a valve - controlled outlet 8 connected to the engine induction pipe, whereby, under the influence of the engine suction, air is drawn through the tube 12 into and through the oil and carries oil into the induction pipe, the level of oil is maintained constant by supply from a reservoir 15 on the birdfountain principle. The reservoir 15 is sealed by a cap 16 and communicates with the vessel 1 by a depending tube 17 within which is arranged a hollow stem 18 carrying at its lower end a valve 19 urged towards the end of the tube 17 by a spring 20. The upper end of stem 18, which is provided with a vent opening 22, abuts against the cap 16 so as to hold the valve 19 off its seat, but, on removing the cap 16 for filling purposes, the spring 20 causes the valve 19 to close. Oil passes from the reservoir 15 to the vessel 1 through the tube 17 when the lower end of the stem 18 is uncovered. The outer end of tube 12 is fitted with a perforated cap 13 containing a gauge filter 14, and a filter pad 5 of porous material is aranged in the vessel 1 beneath the outlet 8, the pad being supported on a gauge disc 6 resting on lugs 7.
