Abstract

461,034. Liquid-seals. COSSAIS, R. E. Dec. 11, 1935, Nos. 34406 and 34407. Convention dates, Dec. 13, 1934 and March 28, 1935. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XVII and XXVII] In a container or receptacle for carburant or lubricating oil an air inlet device is provided adapted to prevent the escape of vapours therefrom whilst allowing admission of air thereto, and includes a member so shaped as to provide a receptacle for fluid formed by condension of the vapours and a conduit extending into the fluid so collected and thereby forming a hydraulic joint for the air inlet, and a non-return valve normally closing the inlet and actuatable in an opening direction by suction or vacuum produced in the container. The screw down cap B of a petrol tank having a sealing ring 4, Fig. 1, comprises a member having an axial air inlet 1, a tubular element 19 screwed thereon a valve body 8 having a packing ring 7 and a safety-valve 10 having lateral ports 11 and pressed downwardly by a spring 13, the bore of the valve 10 constituting the seat of a valve 15 urged upwardly by the spring 18. The inlet 1 is connected by channels 3 to the atmosphere and the lower orifice 22 in the element 19 opens into a condensation cup 23 forming a seal. The suction of the engine produces a suction in the tank which opens the valve 15 to admit air which issues through the holes 24, If excess pressure is generated in the tank mixed petrol vapour and air escapes by lifting the valve 10. The grid g prevents the outflow of liquid petrol. In a carburetter the valve 79, Fig. 2, pressed upwardly by a spring 80 is guided by a member 74 in the tubular body 71. When a vacuum exists in the float chamber the valve 79 is drawn downwardly and air enters through the ports 81 and through the hydraulic joint 83.
