Piles. - Sheet-metal piling consists of I section piles a, in groups channel-section piles b or other piles of one or more, alternating with which are open towards the face of the wall. In a modification, the piles b are replaced by I-section piles with their webs parallel to the face of the wall. The perpendicularity of the succeeding sections may be maintained by splaying or compressing certain of the flanges as necessary in order to taper them. Ladders, fire hose. mooring-devices, &c. may be placed in the recessed part b.
