Abstract
292,318. Telford, W. M. May 9, 1927. Heating by electricity.- In a process of electric arc welding with direct or alternating current, in which the length of the arc and travel along the seam are controlled by an electric characteristic of the arc, a metal electrode is used of cross-section substantially longer in one direction than in any other, e.g. rectangular, triangular, or elliptical in order to obtain a deeper penetration with a high current-density and high speed of operation. In order to prevent the tendency of the arc to lengthen at the rear edge 30 of the electrode 26 due to the asymmetrical magnetic field surrounding it, a permanent or electromagnet 28 is arranged behind the electrode.
