Abstract
291,581. Mortimer, R. C., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. April 21, 1927. Skid; arresting grips or friction apparatus on permanent way. - Brake mechanism for vehicles more particularly such as are used for propelling an electric hare in greyhound racing comprises a brake-shoe urged as by a spring to engage the track and a rotary cam or eccentric surface adapted to disengage the shoe by rotation in one direction and to engage the shoe by continued rotation in the same direction or bv reverse rotation. A pair of shoes 10, 11 slidably mounted in guides 12 on the vehicle are urged by springs 13 to engage a lower rail 15 which may be the running rail and an upper rail 16. Each shoe is provided with a part 17 engaging cam surfaces 19 formed on the interior of a rotarv disc 20. By turning the disc in a clockwise direction from the position shown the shoes may be withdrawn from the rails and they may be applied by the engagement of a lever on the disc with a stop on the track whereby the disc is turned further in the same direction causing the parts 17 to slip over notches 26 in the cam surfaces. Alternatively, the shoes may normally be in the outer position shown but the rails 15, 16 arc then spaced apart so as not to be engaged by the shoes except at the point at which braking is required, where they converge. When the vehicle has been brought to rest the shoes may be withdrawn from engagement with the rails by turning the disc 20.
