Celluloid and like compositions, preparation of -Compositions containing viscous solutions of cellulose derivatives such as esters or ethers with or without softening agents, fillers, resins, dyes, artificial resins, rubber, &c., are prassed through narrow apertures in a highly heated state, whereby the issuing mass swells and the solvent evaporates, leaving a dry, brittle product which is easily disintegrated into a moulding-powder. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process consists of a cylinder with a piston or screw from which the mass is forced through thin tubes, slots &c. which are heated. Gelatinization may take place during ar prior to the extension process Condensation products or partial reaction pro ducts or the constituents may be added to the mass in the cylinder and the reaction brought about by the heating and pressing during axtension, or these materials may be added to the powdered produot, and convention effected during the final moulding. By adding colouring matter to the material in the cylinder, and extending without mixing, multicoloured strands may be produced which may be fed direct into moulds, and pressed and heated to form variegated articles.
