Abstract

A solid adhesive in the form of sheets or powder comprises at least two components consisting of cellulose derivatives with or without softening agents, intimately mixed together, which have adhesive properties under the influence of solvents, but which differ in softening properties so that the component which softens more slowly acts as a "frame" substance for the more readily softening component which serves as "filler." Where more than two components are used both the "frame" substance and the "filler" may consist of more than one component. The cellulose derivatives may be esters such as cellulose acetate and nitrate or ethers. The components may comprise either different cellulose derivatives or like cellulose derivatives worked up with different plasticizing agents or with different quantities of the same plasticizer or like cellulose derivatives which yield in the same solvent or solvent mixture solution of different viscosities, for example pyroxylin and lowviscosity nitrocellulose. Other suitable binary mixtures described are celluloid and nitro cellulose, celluloid and gelatinized acetyl-cellulose and two kinds of celluloid obtained from nitrocelluloses of different viscosities. Sheets may be made by pressing powders made by mixing the powdered components or by casting or by using solvents, kneading and rolling out. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also compositions having adhesive properties under the action of heat and the use of components such as rubber and natural or synthetic resins, for example phenol-aldehyde or polyvalent acid - polyhydric alcohol condensation products and polymerized vinyl esters or styrene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A solid adhesive in the form of sheets or powder comprises at least two components consisting of cellulose derivatives with or without softening agents, intimately mixed together, which have adhesive properties under the influence of solvents, but which differ in softening properties so that the component which softens more slowly acts as a "frame" substance for the more readily softening component which serves as "filler." Sheets may be made by pressing powders made by mixing the powdered components or by casting or by using solvents, kneading, and rolling out. Applications of the adhesive described include the manufacture of soles of shoes, compound fabrics, three-ply wood, metallic cable casings, and insulating layers. In the production of non-splintering glass the intermediate layer may comprise celluloid or acetyl cellulose as "frame" substance and a cellulose derivative containing a large quantity of softener as "filler," with or without resins. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also compositions having adhesive properties under the action of heat and the use of components such as rubber and natural or synthetic resins, for example phenol-aldehyde or polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol condensation products and polymerized vinyl esters or styrene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
