Abstract

High-tension switches. - High-tension airbreak switches are constructed with a movable contact carried by two insulators which are rigidly arranged relatively to one another in the same plane, but are so inclined to each other that the switch opening and closing stresses are transmitted to the rod insulators purely as tension and compression forces, thus preventing any bending strains on the insulators or the supports to which they are cemented. As shown in Fig. 1 the movable contact blade hand arcing horn e<2> are carried by an angularly movable framework consisting of the root insulators g, g<1> secured at their lower ends to a channel iron member f. If considerable pressure has to be employed in opening the switch, as, for example, when the contacts have been frozen together, the inclination of the insulators is such that the outer insulator bears a tension component of this force and the inner insulator a compression component. In closing the converse occurs. The fixed contact clip d and arcing horn e are mounted on a similar framework consisting of insulators b, b' mounted on fixed channel iron base members a to which the movable framework is pivoted at f<1>. In a modified arrangement shown in Fig. 3, two movable contact members constructed as already described are provided, swinging outwardly at opposite sides of a fixed contact structure consisting of two insulators m, m<1> secured together by a transverse bar n, the frame thus formed being braced by a diagonal insulator o.
