Abstract

290,317. Hornsey, J. W. Jan. 5, 1927. Extracting; purifying.-In a process for reducing phosphoric iron ores, as described in Specification 284,040, the reduction process is conducted so that a sufficient proportion of unreduced iron oxide remains in the iron so as to prevent the phosphorus from being released in elemental form during the subsequent conversion of the iron into steel. The result is achieved by regulating the amount of the reducing agent and the ore and, if desired. the temperature of the reduction, so that a slightly greater proportion of the ore, e.g. an extra 2-5 per cent, remains unreduced than is unreduced under normal conditions. If the iron does not contain the necessary amount of oxide, a small quantity of iron oxide may be added to the iron before its conversion into steel.
