Abstract

Ester condensation products. - A synthetic resin is produced by heating to a reaction temperature, for example 180-265‹ C., a mixture containing penta-erythritol, a polybasic acid such as succinic, malic, maleic, fumaric, tartaric, citric or phthalic acids, or phthalic anhydride, and a drying oil acid such as linseed, perilla, soya bean, chinawood, or fish oil acids, preferably with a natural resin of an acidic nature and whose acid number is not substantially less than 50. In one method, penta-erythritol, phthalic anhydride, drying oil acids with or without natural resin acids are heated, preferably in the absence of air, as in a carbon dioxide stream, to 180-265‹ C. for 7-10 hours. Natural resins which may be included in the compositions comprise rosin, copal, Congo and fossil resins. Acids from heat-treated or otherwise modified drying oils may be used. Examples of suitable reaction mixtures are given.
