288,995. American Steel Foundries, (Assignees of Oelkers, A. H., and Floyd, G. G.). April 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Capillary-action lubricating. - In a railroad wheel and axle assembly a wheel 37 is secured on a tubular axle 29 mounted on roller bearings 25 the inner race ring 22 of which is secured to an axle 10. Bach end of the latter is mounted in the usual standard journal bearing 15 carried in a box 11. The axle-box 11 contains dry waste 45 contacting with the under portion of the axle 10. The latter is hollow and contains lubricant and has an outlet hole 41 in the central plane of the journal bearing closed by a frangible plug 42. The tubular axle 29 contains lubricant for the roller bearing. In operation the wheels revolve on the roller bearing 25, the axle 10 being stationary. Should the bearing 25 jam or fail, the axle 10 rotates, and the projecting end of the plug 42 knocks against the journal bearing brass 15 and is sheared so that lubricant passes to the waste 43 to lubricate the journal bearing.
