Abstract

288,556. American Steel Foundries, (Assignees of Oelkers, A. H.). April 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Axles. - In a railway vehicle axle construction a stationary axle 13, Fig. 1, is adapted to be mounted in axle-boxes 14 provided on a vehicle supporting frame and a hollow axle 10 with wheels 11 is mounted on the inner axle by antifriction bearings 20, the outer axle containing lubricant and having flared ends so that the antifriction bearings are lubricated by centrifugal action. In order to readily convert railway vehicles having axle bearings of the journal type to those having roller bearings, all replaced axles are of the construction shown in Fig. 2 in which the wheels and tubular portion 10 are similar to the corresponding parts of, Fig. 1, a journal 34 being forced into the expanded portion 23 at each end of the tube to fit in the axle-box 14. This journal portion is removed, when converting the axle to roller bearings, by cutting off the journal at the root and inserting an extractor through the hole 41. The tubular portion 10 is flared outwardly from the centre to increase its strength. The wheels 11 and axle 10 are assembled on the stationary axle 13 by means of a frame comprising end plates 74, 79, Fig. 9, connected by tie-bars 75, 76. The end plate 74 is provided with a plunger 72 and the plate 79 with a pressure ring 83. The bearing with sleeve 26, ring 85 and screwed plug 27 are assembled on the left hand side of the axle 13 and a predetermined pressure applied by the plunger 72. A sleeve, ring and plug are then inserted on the right hand end of the axle 13, due allowance for clearance being made in the length of the sleeve, and the plug locked in position.
