Abstract

Endless-track vehicles.- Relates to motor vehicles of the kind having endlesstracks and road wheels for alternative use, the conversion from one state to the other and back again being effected by power-operated mechanism comprising a clutch and a crank or similar device which is driven through the clutch in one direction only. According to the present invention, (1) two cranks are provided at each side of the vehicle, (2) two oppositely - arranged cranks are mounted on a transverse operating shaft, or (3) the chassis carries pinions each of which engages a row of pegs carried by a link connected to the part to be operated, this gearing forming a kind of " mangle gearing.'' In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a power-operated shaft E drives two transverse shafts E<1> each having a crank E<2> at each side of the vehicle connected by links e<2> to the corresponding track frame C<3>. Thus, as the shaft E is rotated the track frames are raised and lowered relatively to the chassis frame A and the road wheels B. The track frames are guided vertically by means of slides C<5>. In a modification the cranks E<2> are connected to blocks sliding in horizontal guides in the track frames. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, a longitudinal shaft F<1> drives transverse shafts carrying pinions F which gear with pegs fixed in the upper ends of links f<1> connected to the track frames C<3>. These links have curved guides which move over the pinion shaft bearings and so guide the links that the pinions move from one side of the pegs to the other and raise and lower the links. In all the constructions shown the track frames together with the idler wheel C<2> are raised and lowered relatively to the chassis, but the invention may also be applied to those vehicles in which (1) the road wheels are raised and lowered relatively to the chassis and the endless tracks, and (2) the road wheels and the endless tracks are each raised and lowered relatively to the chassis.
