Abstract

288,308. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 6, 1927, [Convention date]. Phenol is obtained by passing chlorbenzene with steam over active silica gel at about 350‹ C. In an example chlorbenzene is boiled with water to which caustic soda lye has been added and the vapours are conducted through heated tubes filled with active silica gel. The vapours, containing pherol, hydrochloric acid and unchanged chlorbenzene are condensed and led back into the distillation vessel, where the phenol and hydrochloric acid are fixed by the caustic soda lye.
