Abstract

287,962. Kirke, P. St. G. Dec. 28, 1926. Water-tube boilers.-In a water-tube boiler of the kind consisting of one or more units each of which comprises an upper and a lower drum a, b respectively joined together by a number of transverse rows of tubes c, the pass for the hot gases being in the direction of the axis of the drums, withdrawal and replacement of the tubes is permitted by means of doors f situated between the upper drums and the furnace walls. The rows of tubes are arranged in pairs with sufficient space between the pairs for access to the tubes thereof, while the upper drum is preferably supported at each end by straps r from girders s with the 'lower drum free to move vertically to allow of expansion and contraction of the tubes. Where two or more units are employed the nest of tubes are made wider than the diameter of the drums and the tubes of one unit are arranged to overlap those of the adjacent unit, while doors f may be provided between adjacent upper drums. According to the Provisional Specification a superheater may be positioned between the tubes, while, to avoid a large deposit of scale in the tubes next the furnace, the feed-water is introduced into one of the drums at the end remote from the furnace and the drums are provided with baffles to hinder the flow of said feed-water towards the high temperature tubes before it has been well heated.
