Abstract

287,810. Orchard, J. L., and Cambridge Instrument Co., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1927. Addition to 248,301. Thermometers.-The parent Specification describes means for measuring the temperature of curved surfaces, comprising a thermocouple of strip form so mounted that it can be made to conform to the contour of the surface. The present invention comprises a number of modified constructions of such a thermometer. In one form for measuring relatively low temperatures, a number of thermocouple strips, each attached to the ends of a spring 'arm as described in the parent Specification, are arranged side by side and connected together in series so that a magnified reading is obtained on the galvanometer &c. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, adapted for distant use, the thermocouple strip 7 is mounted on a spring 5 which is clamped between the head 10 of a telescopic support 11, 12. 13 and a washer 14 by a bolt 15 and nut 16. The spring 5 and washer 14 are rotatable through about 90‹, the extent of rotation being determined by a pin 17 engaging in a slot. The leads 9, 9a connecting the strip 7 to the indicator 1 are carried by telescopic members 18, 19,20 within the support 11, 12, 13. Fig. 10 shows a form suitable for application to a. concave surface. A tubular support 25 fits frictionally within a tube 34 carrying the indicator 1 and handle 1a. At its outer end the tube 25 is bifurcated and has pivoted to it a member 38. The thermocouple strip 7 with its supporting spring strip 31 are mounted; on a block 41 by screws 42 which pass into the member 38. The leads 9, 9a are connected to the thermocouple by lugs 43a, 44a, which are clamped between the blocks 38, 41 by the screws 42. 288,105. Electroflo Meters Co., Ltd., (Republic Flow Meters Co.). Nov. 4, 1927. Pyrometers.-A casing for housing the connection between the elements of a thermocouple and the conductors leading to the measuring instrument is made in two separable parts, one of which is provided with openings to receive the thermocouple elements and the, conductors. The elements 10, 11 pass through a sleeve 13 threaded into the lower part 15 of the casing and through an insulating block 17 also seated in the part 15. The upper parts 21 of the elements 10, 11 are threaded to form binding posts on which are secured the conductors 23 which pass out through an armour 24 secured in the part 15. The part 16 forming the cover of the casing is secured to the part 15 by screws 27.
