Cutting glass.-A device for opening ampoules and sealed glass tubes comprises means for cutting the glass and means for striking the part of the tube to be removed. The apparatus comprises a base-plate a having an elongated recess or slot 6 along one edge of which a cutter k is disposed. The holder k<1> of the cutter is free to slide to and from the slot, but is forced towards it by, a spring. A rod e, having a cranked arm e<1>, is journaled in bearings c secured to the base-plate and is surrounded by a coiled spring d. A knob f on the other end of the rod e is provided with pin g which can engage a spring-operated latch h. A bell-crank lever n, pivoted on the underside of the baseplate, has one arm projecting across the slot b while the other arm engages an arm of a lever v, also pivoted on the base-plate. The other arm of the lever v is bent upwards to form the latch h. In use, the knob f is turned to rotate the rod e, against the action of the spring d, until the pin engages the latch h and the cranked arm e<1> takes up the position shown in Fig. 1. The neck B of the sealed glass tube is passed along the slot b and it makes contact with, and is cut by, the cutter k. When it reaches the end of the slot b, that tube presses against and moves the lever n, thus causing the latch h to release the pin g. The spring d then rotates the rod e and the cranked arm e<1> strikes and breaks off the end of the glass tube. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes a construction in which the cutter and the striker are mounted on two scissor-like members. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted but forms the subject of Specification 303,735.
