FLoA'riNe SHEAR CONTROL Fon PRESSURE ROLLERS.
Application sied May 3,
This invention relates -to cloth measuringy or cost computing machines. T he indicating mechanism of such machine'sis advanced by pulling the fabric to'be measured pasta measuring roller, tl communicated tothe indicating mechanism.
rlhere is usually provided a presser rollerv which co-operates with the measuringroller to hold the fabric against 'the measuring roller and thereby cause 'the measuring roller bythe fabric. The presser roller is lieldaway and positioned in the machine to take ameasurement; as soon as the fabric'vis properly positioned the presser roller is then let down against the fabric to hold the same against the measuring. roller. In positioning the fabric in such a machine, the accuracy of the measurement depends upon whether the forward edge of the fabric is properly aligned with the marking means, forv marking the point at which the measured piece must be cut-off. It is evident that if the li`orward edge of the fabric is carried be yond the point where it shouldy be, the machine will not measure the full quantity of fabric that is sold, thereby occ-asioning a loss to the retailer. The general object of this inventionv is to provide means for insuring the proper alignment of the forward edge of the fabric before the measuring operation commences; and 4to provide simple means located in line with the marking means, for controlling lthe operation of the presser roller before starting the measuring Voperation.
Further objects of the invention will appear lier-einaftenj i The invention consists in the novel features and in the general combination of parts to bey particularly described hereinafter` all of which contribute to produce a simple and eiiicient cloth measuring or cost Specification 'of Letters Patent.

fabricl after a meas! to the parts, the machine., illustrated comprises a casing windows 2 provided, through `which. charts 3 are of a` measuringfroller 5s Above this .measuring roller 5 and co-oper- I "f l themachine as means is located. This marking means is for the purpose of marking the edge of the fabric at the point where it is to be cut off after a measurement has been taken. The marking means is preferably in the form of shears including a hand-operated marking lever 12 carrying a blade 13; when the lever V12 is actuated' by means of a thumb plate 14 running in a slot 15 in the side wall of the casing (see Fig. 1), the knife 13 will mark the edge of the fabric. Suitable means may be provided to co-operate with the knife 13 to attain this effect. Substantially in alignment with the marking means, l provide a hand-actuated part, or movable member 16 which is mounted to move in a sub- 'stantially vertical plane and this movable member is connected by suitablemeans with the presser roller frame 7 for controlling the operation of the presser roller. The movable member for controlling the presser roller is preferably in the form of a floating knife or lever 16 Fig. 6 which carries a blade 17 co-operating with the other knife or blade 13. Co-operating with this floating knife or lever I provide means which may be controlled by the marking lever 12 automatically7 so that when the marking lever is actuated the floating lever 16 will become locked against movementv thereby enabling the blade 17 to co-operate with the knife or blade 13. But the marking lever 12 is normally held elevated by a coil spring 18 and when in this position the floating lever 16 may be freely operated. Any suitable connection may be provided between the movable member or floating lever 16 and the presser roller frame 7 for controlling the same. Tn the present inst-ance the presser roller frame is provided with a laterally projecting arm 19 which projects through an opening 20 in a side frame plate 21 (see Fig. 1). )Vhen the lever 12 is depressedg a projection 22 on the edge of this lever engages the arm 19 and forces it down, thereby extending a spring 23 which is attached to the presser roller frame and normally exerts a force upon the frame tending to force the presser roller down upon the measuring roller. T provide suitable latching means for latching the arm 19 down when it has been depressed by the lever 12, and this latching means preferably consists of a. slide or slide plate 24 (see Fig. 4). This slide is suitably guided on the frame plate 21, for which purpose the frame plate may be provided -with openings 25 (see Figs. 1 and 5) and the ends of the slideplate are off-set laterally so as to be received in these guide'openings and so that the off-set inner end 26 of l the slide plate is guided on the vertical edge of a transverse vertical frame plate 27 (see Fig. 5). In a similar manner setend 28 of this plate is guided across the vertical edge of a frame plate 29. The lower the outer off p edge of this slide is provided with a vertical notch 30 which will receive the arm 19 when the plate is disposed in its eXtreme position toward the right, that is to say,v when lthe presser roller is in contact with the measuring roller, this arm 19 lies in the slot. lhen the arm 19 is depressed to raise the presser roller, as soon as the arm passes below a shoulder 31 which is formed in the side of the notch 30, the latch or slide 24 will be pulled toward the left by a coil spring 32 one' end of which is attached to a pin carried by the slide and the other end of which is attached to a pin 33 on the inner side of the frame plate 21; in this way the latch will operate automatically to hold the arm down and thereby hold the presser roller away from the measuring roller. ln order to enable the floating lever 16 to control this latch l simply provide the floating lever 16 with an upwardly extending arm 34 terminating in a rounded head 35 which engages the inner end of the latch or slide. The floating lever 16 is normally held elevated by means of a coil spring 36 attached to the upper end of the arm 34. This lever is provided with a tail 37, the lower edge of which is normally held against a stop-pin 38 projecting from the side of a bracket 39 which carries a common pivot 40 which supports both the levers 12 and 16. The preferred construction of the floating lever is illustrated in Figure 6.
Suitable means may be provided for effect-- ing the locking of the movable member or floating lever 16 to prevent the same from moving when the marking lever 12 is being operated. For this purpose T prefer to provide a locking means in the form of a locking member 41 which may consist of a slide mounted to slide on a horizontal face 42 on the bracket 39, being guided thereupon by means of a slot 43 in the member 41 anda screw 44 in the bracket. A suitable conne@ tion is provided between the lever 12 and this locking member which operates to move the locking member into engagement with the floating lever to lock the lever against movement. This connection may be in the form of a slot 45 formed in the lever cooperating with a pin 46 on the side of the locking member or lock 41. The outer end of the locking member 41 has an upwardly projecting toe 47 having a rounded upper edge. 1When the lever 12 is in its raised position the toe 47 is disposed toward the right and out of the path of movement of the floating lever 16, but when the lever 12 is depressed the pinand-slot connection at 45 and 46 will slide the lock 41 toward the left so that its toe 47 engages the lower edge, or moves into the path of the lower edge, of the floating lever.y thereby locking the floating lever against movement.
lt should' be understood that the operatork ofthe machine may move the floating lever l@ downwardly by 'applying the pressure of his ngers directly over the knife 17,l In order to protect the fingers of the operator a d to prevent them from coming in direct .Contact with the ripper, edge lof the knife or blade 17, l provide' a protector strip 48 d see Figli-'5), which may be attached tothe inner'fface of the lever and is formed so that it p'rjects 'over the upper edge ofthe lever 16 and above the edge ofthe blade substantially vas shown in Figure 3, r -1 'ln operating the machine it shouldy be i' understood that the, fabric is yintroduced, while the presser roller isy held infan elevated position (see Fig, the' forward edge 'of the fabric being, held between vthe thumb 'and the lingers ofthe operator. The fabric shouldbe positionedv with its forward edge substantially inalignment l with the" marking means, that is to say, in alignment with the'flever l2. As the marking leve'rinoves downwardly it slides the locking member il inwardly (seeF ig. 2), andl locks the movable member or fioating lever'l against movement, thereby enabling its vbladejl'tof co-operate with the lever blade- 13; as the lever 12 moves downwardly "depresses thearm 19"?untilfit comes be` low the shoulder 3l,y lwhereupon `thespringl 32 moves the latch 24 to the leftfs'ol as to hold the presser roller in its raised position.
