Abstract

286,853. Gordon & Co., Ltd., J., (Hagan Corporation). Feb. 9, 1927. Density separators. - Extraneous material is extracted from a whirling stream of gaseous fluid while passing through a chamber with a cylindrical collecting surface; the stream is caused to contract while passing the surface, thereby decreasing the scouring and entraining effect of the stream on the surface. Apparatus of this type used as a steam separator has a chamber a with a cylindrical wall b and an annular inlet port d provided with vanes to give the entering steam a whirling motion. The inlet is arranged round the tubular collector h which is fixed between the chamber a and the discharge port g. An annular pocket l formed in a flange k is situated between the collector h and the port g. For convenience of assembly the separator is formed in two parts which are secured together by lugs rand bolts s. An annular shield u is secured to the casing wall b and the separator is supported by the boiler wall p. Steam enters the port d and whirls round in the casing b on which is deposited the heavier extraneous material and water; this material is discharged through the pipe n. The stream continues its whirling motion as it passes through the tubular collector h and entrains the liquid deposited at the lower end of a collector, causing it to form a moving film on the collector surface. Owing to the port g having a smaller diameter than the collector h and to the shielding action of the flange k the stream leaves the surface of the collector and the entraining action is diminished. This causes the deposited liquid to form drops which run downwards over the film to the edge of the collector h where it is carried off in the form of spray by the incoming stream from the port d. In boiler installations where the feedwater contains an abnormal amount of suspended matter, the separated solids may be discharged without re-delivery to the water of the boiler.
