Abstract

286,598. Soc. Italiana E. Breda. March 5, 1927, [Convention date]. Machine guns.-Relates to machine guns having a short barrel-recoil breech action, the recoil of the barrel being transmitted to the breechblock by an " amplifying " lever. According to the invention, this lever is so arranged that it maintains permanent contact with its operating faces. As shown, the barrel 2, Fig. 1, is attached to a breech body 8 connected to a carriage 15, the face 38 of which bears against the upper arm of the amplifying lever 14, while the curved surfaces 39 of the carriage maintain contact with a roller 36 at the end of the lower arm of the lever. The breech-bolt 7, thrust back by the lever 14, compresses the main recoil spring 12 and is stopped by a spring buffer 13. The recoil spring 12 may be adjusted by means of an end screw plug 16. The bolt 7 is locked in the closed position by a key 17, Fig. 3, sliding transversely in the breech-body and operated by a cam groove in a member 18 in the breech casing 1 during the recoil and run out of the barrel. This locking device is situated near the front end of the bolt and at one side, to leave a free space for the ejection of the spent cartridges downwards. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the following further features : The firing pin 11 is situated in the bolt, but the hammer 27, Fig. 13 (Cancelled), therefor is in a casing 19 at the side of the breech casing. This hammer is cocked against a spring plunger 30 during the recoil, and is held cocked by a detent 28, which is pulled by a lever 29 when this is deflected by the closing of the breech. When the gun is used on an aircraft, the fire is controlled by the propeller shaft, which is connected by suitable mechanism to a detent 45 adapted to hold the hammer after its release by the detent 28 until the proper moment determined by the propeller shaft. The cartridges are supplied by a belt fed through a transverse way 3 above the breech-body by a lever 5 worked by the breech-bolt (as described in Specification 305,595), through a winglike arm 6 pivoted on a long spindle 41 and provided with a tooth 42 engaging a cam on the breech-bolt, which, with the breech-body, is made of cylindrical shape. During the opening of the breech, a cartridge is extracted from the belt by a double-sided gripper 23, and is then moved down by a vertically sliding pillar 9 operated by a cam in the side of the breech casing. The fresh cartridge takes the place of the ejected cartridge in a gripper in the front of the bolt 7, and is held there by a spring lever while the breech closes. These cartridge feeding and ejecting devices are described in Specification 305,595. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
