Abstract

285,691. Newland, W. Y. May 2, 1927. Heating by electricity.-An apparatus for heating liquids includes a heating element 14 comprising one or more resistance cores 1, 2 wound with insulation 3 under considerable tension and enclosed in a metallic sheathing 6, the element being coupled to the conducting cables by liquidtight connections 10. The element may comprise two cores of iron or nickel chrome steel wcund with oiled paper, an additional insulating winding 5 being provided. The element is coupled to a switch 11 so that the cores may be connected in series or parallel. By means of a switch 16 one core may be cut out of circuit. The liquidtight connections comprise pressed sheet metal plates welded together at the edges and housing the ends of the elements and conducting cables which are bared and twisted together, the joints being wrapped around with rubber insulation. The earthing appliance described in Specification 286,563, [Class 41, Electrolysis], may be used in conjunction with the apparatus. According to the Provisional Specification the apparatus is intended primarily for use in electro-plating.
