Dynamometers.-In a machine for measuring the cutting force of a tool, a component or components of the cutting force is transmitted to a piezo electric material or materials and the electricity produced is measured. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention applied to measure the vertical thrust and the horizontal tangential force of cutting of a drill. The work 3 is clamped between a cover 1 and a block 2, the cover being provided with a hole 6 and the block with a recess 7 to accommodate the drill. The block has a shaft 8 mounted in ball bearings 10 and carrying at the end a plate 12 clamped to the shaft by a ball-ended bolt 13. A second plate 16 supported on a conical projection 11 is connected loosely to the plate 12 by bolts 14, 15, and between the plates 12, 16 are mounted a plate 17 and quartz block 18. Springs 21, 22 apply an initial force to keep the plates and quartz block in contact. A gauge is provided for aligning and centering the block 2 with the drill. The tangential force is measured by a quartz block 28 similarly supported on a standard 29 and acted upon by a ball 25 secured to a radial arm 23 fixed to the shaft 8. Similar devices are described and illustrated for measuring the cutting forces in three directions at right angles in a lathe or milling machine and a suitable switch is so arranged that the same electrical instrument may measure any of the forces.
