Abstract

284,708. Charters, W. B. Feb. 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Energy-absorbing elements. - A brake for motor vehicles comprises two or more pistons driven from the driving axle or shaft, each piston being provided with a non-return valve whereby it is adapted to force liquid from a central chamber through a passage in which is disposed a restricting valve. As shown in Fig. 3, pistons 17, 18 each having a non-return valve 24, 25 are driven by an eccentric 12. A valve or cock 21 disposed in a passage 20 connecting the outer ends of the cylinders has two axial passages 22 separated by a partition 21<1>. Each passage 22 opens past a flap valve 23 into a central chamber 19 and has a port 27, 28 adapted to register more or less with the passage 20 according to the position of the valve. Thus during each outward stroke of the pistons liquid is forced through the passage 20 and the restricted port 27, 28 into the chamber 19 thereby producing a braking action. The shaft 7 of the eccentric 12 may extend transversely into the transmission housing of the vehicle and be geared therein to the driving shaft.
