Latches, lift and thumb; striking-plates for latches.-A latch comprises a length of spring wire. anchored at one end 1<a> to a door 2 and bent to form a handle 1 between the end 1<a> to a door 2 and bent to form a handle 1 between the end 1<a> and the fulcrum 1<b>, the remainder forming the free or latch end 1<c>. The parts 1<a>, 1<b> are secured by a staple 3 also formed of wire, while the end 1<c> may be bent at 1<d> to receive a padlock 8 or a metal or wooden bar which also passes through the wire striking-plate 6. An outer wire handle 9 may be bent at 9<b> to form a pivot and be bent again to engage a groove 12 in a lifting-member 11. The end 1<c> may be strengthened for wear by a metal sleeve, by doubling the wire, or by using thicker wire.
