Abstract
284,492. White, A. E., (Bowen Products Corporation). March 15, 1927. Right to Patent relinquished. Single-acting suction-valveless piston pumps.- A lubricating system has means for varying the pressure in a supply line 2 in which is a control device comprising a chamber divided into two parts 9, 10, the upper part 9 which is of larger diameter than the part 10 containing a loosely fitting piston 12. The latter is urged upwardly by a spring 13 supported in the chamber portion 10, the lower part of which has a non-return, spring-actuated valve 16 controlling the outlet of lubricant from the chamber to the part to be lubricated. At each pressure impulse in the line 2, the piston 12 drives the lubricant below it through the valve 16 and remains in contact with the abutment face 11 until the pressure in the pipe 2 is reduced sufficiently to permit the spring 13 to return the piston to its upper position when lubricant leaks past it to form the next charge. The stroke of the piston 12 may be varied by changing its length or by an adjustable stop 15. The shoulder 11 or the underface of the piston 12 may be ridged to permit of line contact between the parts 11, 12. The line 2 may be supplied by a foot or hand pump as shown in Fig. 1, or bv a pump such as shown in Fig. 10, driven by the machine to be lubricated. A cam 48, Fig. 10, in an oil reservoir 40 is rotated by gearing 57, 58. or by a ratchet device so that it slowly depresses a piston 50 having a stem 49 with a passage 51, so that when the piston 50 is near the bottom of its stroke oil passes from the reservoir 40 to the space above the piston. The latter under the action of a spring 52 then returns suddenly to its upper position causing a charge of oil under pressure To pass through the pressure line 22 to the control device or devices.
