Abstract

284,118. Osborn, F. J., and Wood, N. F. May 4, 1927. Steering-mechanism.-The invention comprises an improved frame of the duplex type for motorcycles and like vehicles having a single steering- wheel, and improved steering-mechanism particularly applicable to such frame. The frame comprises a pair of top members 1, Figs. 1 and 2, a pair of bottom members 2, a pair of steering- heads 3, and struts 8, the two side frames thus formed being connected by cross bracing 4. Rotatably mounted in each head 3 is a steering- column 9, to the upper and lower ends of which are secured links 11, the forward ends of which are secured to a rod 12; the columns 9, links 11, and rods 12 thus form a pair of rigid frames capable of swinging about the axes of the heads 3. The wheel axle 6 is carried by lugs 13 slidable on the rods 12. The upper ends of the rods 12 are connected by a pivoted link 14, to which the handle-,bar 5 is secured. In steering, the handle-bar 5 moves the links 14, 11 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, the axle 6 moving in similar manner to the link 14, the centre of which traverses the path S. The front parts 2<a> of the bottom frame members 2 are outwardly bowed to allow sufficient angular movement of the wheel for steering purposes. The wheel-carrying lugs 13 are acted upon by compression springs 15 and rebound springs 17 mounted on the rods 12. In a modification, the springs 15, 17 are surrounded by sleeves in which the lugs 13 slide, the axle-carrying portions of the lugs extending through slots in the, sleeves. As a further modification, the axle 6 may be carried by links pivoted to fixed lugs 13 and controlled by springs in known manner.
