Casting-machines. - In apparatus for casting plates or grids, a number of split moulds are movable along a track, and means are provided for engaging the moulds at each end of a defined section of the track, the two engaging means being connected to one another by apparatus so contrived that resilient pressure is exerted on the group of moulds within such section to hold the moulds in contact with one another. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the moulds a have rack teeth b - - b<3> on their upper and lower edges, so that, when the moulds are packed together, continuous racks are formed. The moulds have suitable recesses on opposite faces, so that when two moulds are packed together, the enclosed cavity is of the form necessary to produce the article. The moulds are filled while they are horizontal, or approximately so, in the portion of the course not illustrated. The metal poured into the cavity on the face of the horizontal mould will, owing to its viscosity, remain in the cavity while the mould is swung upward into contact with the preceding mould. The racks are engaged by pinions e - - e<7>, the pinions e - - e<3> being on shafts d, d<1> and the pinions e<4> - - e<7> being on the shafts d<2> - - d<5>. The shafts d, d' carry sprockets f, f<2> connected by chains to sprockets f<4>, f<7> loose on the shafts d<2> - - d<5>. Secured to each sprocket f<4> - - f<7> is a disc j - - j<3>, and each disc j - - j<3> co-operates with a disc j - - j<7> loose on the shafts d<2> - - d<5>. Each disc j<4> - - j<7> has an exterior lug k connected by an adjustable screw bolt or turnbuckle l to an arm m fixed on the corresponding shafts d2 - - d<5>. The discs j - - j<7> are preferably flanged inwardly and have lugs n, o between which are housed compression springs p. The moulds a may have lugs r to ride on guide rods r<1>, and electric heaters s may be positioned inside the moulds. In operation, the, drive transmitted from the shafts d, d<1> through the chains to the loose sprockets f<4> - - f' is carried by the springs p to the discs j<4> - - j<7> and through the arms m to the shafts d<2> - - d<5> and the pinions e<4> - - e<7>. The spring-operated pinions e<4> - - e' tend to turn faster than the pinions e - - e3, thus holding all the moulds a between the pinions tightly together.
