Abstract

593,715. Moulds; casting-machines. POLLOCK, S. A. April 21, 1945, No. 10083. [Class 83 (i)] A mould for casting an element of an electric storage battery consists of a pack of matrices or mould parts to form the grids or plates and a supplementary mould located in a channel n at right angles to the matrices to form a bus-bar &c. The matrices 1, 2 are steel plates, each having a border groove b, vertical and horizontal grooves v, h, a filling or venting groove c, a recess l for a lug, recesses f for feet and a notch n for the mould t. When the matrices 1, 2 are assembled all the grooves &c. align, except the horizontal grooves h to produce a desired form of grid. A number of pairs 1, 2 are arranged in a case made of plates 5 ... 8, Fig. 4, each pair being separated from the next by a plane steel plate 3 also provided with a notch n. In the channel formed by the notches n, a mould t for forming a bus-bar to connect all the grids cast or a number of such moulds if a number of elements comprising a smaller number of grids are to be cast. The matrices &c are clamped by a plate 9 and screw 10, the whole mould is heated to the temperature of the molten metal into which it is then lowered until an opening 14 is submerged. The case is then exhausted by a pipe, 12 to draw the molten metal through the opening 14 up the side and over the top of the matrices as indicated by the broken line and so into the cavities. When a glass section of the pipe 12 shows the case is full, compressed air is admitted at 12 to discharge unwanted metal and compress that in the cavities. Instead of the opening 14, the case may have a depending pipe, which is dipped into the molten metal so that the degree of vacuum may be regulated by the length of such pipe. In another modification this depending pipe is coupled to or inserted into a pipe which is kept full of molten metal by being connected to a covered pot below the level of the metal therein. The pot may have an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen. The pipes may have separate heating means and the pipe depending from the case may have a cock. In another modification the mould has a funnel for filling by gravity.
