Alternating - current induction machines.- In an arrangement for generating alternating- current by means of an asynchronous generator driven by a Diesel or other reciprocating engine giving a variable torque the generator is cascaded with a commutator machine so excited that it introduces into the secondary circuit of the generator carrying the slip frequency two voltages, one of which is proportional to the slip of the asynchronous generator and cancels its slip voltage wholly or in part while the other is independent of the slip of the generator and produces the load current in the secondary of the generator circuit in the manner described in Specification 283,957. In the arrangement shown, the asynchronous generator 1, driven by a Diesel engine 3, is cascaded with a commutator machine 2 rotor-excited by two voltages, one from a line transformer 14 and one from a statorfed commutator shunt machine 12 mechanicallv coupled to the generator 1. The machine 12 excites the machine 2 so that it produces a voltage equal and opposite to the slip voltage of the main machine 1. The second component is constant and gives a current in the rotor of the generator 1 independent of the slip and therefore producing a constant power output from the generator. Bv adjustment of the transformer 14, the output of the generator may be brought up to the maximum output of the engine.
