Abstract
283,080. Libani, R. July 18, 1927. Addition to 233,995. Boat-lowering gear.-A fluid-friction brake for controlling the lowering of ships' lifeboats comprises a drum 1 on which the falls are wound. A piston 2 sliding inside the drum has a screwthreaded stem 13 which works in a nut constituted by the forward end of a fixed hollow member 19 the external surface of which forms a bearing for the drum 1. The piston 2 is guided by a fixed angular member 18 which engages in a complementary recess in the stem 13. The bearing 6 supporting the other end of the drum as well as the far end of the hollow member 19 are connected by an external tube controlled by a stop cock. The whole of the system, including the interior of the drum, the hollow member 19 and the external table, is filled with a suitable fluid, a leak 20 establishing connection between the member 19 and the drum. During lowering operations, liquid under the control of the stop cock flows from one side of the piston to the other, suitable leaks being formed in the bearing 5.
