Abstract

282,412. Schering-Kahlbaum Akt.- Ges. Dec. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Alkyl-#-halogenethyl-ketones are prepared by reacting on ethylene with an acyl halide in the presence of a metallic halide of the kind used in the Friedel-Crafts reaction, such as aluminium or iron halide, and treating the product with water preferably in the cold. Solvents or diluents may be present, e.g. chloroform, carbon bisulphide, nitrobenzene, bexane, or an excess of the acyl halide itself. Examples are given of the preparation of methyl-#-chlorethyl-ketone and methyl-#-bromethyl-ketone from ethylene and acetyl chloride or bromide.
