Density separators.-An apparatus for cleaning the air entering a carburettor comprises a, cylindrical vessel A containing a central tube B carrying helical members B<3>, B<4>, the outer edges of which contact with a moistened wick D carried by an outer tube C. The wick-dips into liquid, preferably oil, contained in a chamber A<1> at the bottom of the vessel A, and a conical baffle E with open sides is situated between the lower end of the tube B and the chamber A<1>. A plate F formed with openings having inwardly curved vanes F<1> is secured to the top of the vessel A, which is provided with a conical cover G held in place by clips G'. The device is secured to the carburettor air inlet by clips G<2> on an extension B<1> of the tube B, a plate H being secured longitudinally in the extension B' to stop the whirling of the charge as it enters the carburettor. The air enters between the cover G and the extension B<1>, is deflected by the vanes F', and is drawn through the helical passages formed by the members B<3>, B<4>, the dust &c. being thrown outwards by centrifugal force on to the wick D; the air is then deflected upwards by the baffle E and is drawn through the tube B. In a modification for use in a, horizontal position, the liquid is contained in a vessel mounted beneath a slot in the side of the vessel A, and the edges of the wick pass through a slit in the cylinder C and dip into the liquid. The helical members may be hollow in cross section, being formed from two strips of metal overlapping at the outer edge, or may be replaced by a series of short vanes either secured to the tube B or formed by slitting and bending outwards portions of a cylinder adapted to fit over the tube B.
