Apparatus for making filaments.-Relates to means ior maintaining uniform the evaporation conditions in a series of cells or chambers constituting the units of a plant for dry-spinning artificial silk. The chambers are provided with heating elements of practically the same construction, and the heating-elements are connected in parallel to one main supply and one main exhaust, and the supply of hot water or other heating-liquid is so ample and so rapid through the elements that there is only a slight drop of temperature during such passage; and air is drawn through each chamber by means of an aspirating-system which is very large in comparison with the quantity of air to be withdrawn, the outlets from the chamber being provided with regulating devices, interchangeable but not individually adjustable, the same for all the chambers and proportioned so as to permit the requisite small quantities of air to pass into the aspirating-system. The regulating device conveniently comprises a plate of definite thickness in which is bored a hole of a definite diameter, and when an adjustment is required, it is necessary only to replace the plate with another having a hole of a different size or the plate may be provided with a succession of holes of different diameters, any one of which holes may be brought into position by a suitable movement of the plate.
