Abstract

Ball-and-socket joints.-A fluid-tight joint bebetween two elements 1, 5, Fig. 1, is formed by providing the element 1 with a. head 2 having a spherical surface 3 adapted to engage a like cavity 4 in the other element 5, positive connection between the two being maintained by a rod 7, carried by the element 5, and a lock-nut 8 which is threaded thereon and acts through a spring 9 upon a shoulder 10 within the head 2. The contacting surfaces of the joint may be lubricated by drilling a hole through the rod 7 and providing a lubricator 14, Fig. 3, which may be carried by an intermediate wedge. A pipe joint formed in accordance with the invention is shown in Fig. 2, while the invention may also be applied to shafts, Fig. 5, joints for brake-operating gear, and to the axles of elliptical springs.
