Abstract

280,596. Daniels, C. E. Nov. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Extrusion machines. -A machine for ma.king pencils comprises a plurality of shaping nozzles with means for feeding a plastic pulp mass therethrough and means actuated bv the extended mass to feed progressively a core through each nozzle; together with means at the outlet of each nozzle to heat and dry the extruded mass. As shown, vertical nozzles 8 are arranged above an extrusion chamber 5 fed from a hopper 6 and fitted with a screw 9. Each nozzle is fitted with a hollow core 28 terminating short of the end of the nozzle and adapted to accommodate a core of lead which is held at its upper end by spring dogs 25 on a cylindrical shank 21 guided by a sleeve 23 along a guide 19. A collar 26 at the lower ends of the member 21 is adapted to be engaged by the extruded mass to raise the member progressively. The upper end of each nozzle projects within a tubular electrical heating- device 30. A cylinder 13 supports the guides 19 and is furnished with arms 15 carrying guide rollers 17 for the pencils. In operation, leads are inserted into the holder 25 and lowered into the tubes 28 and the screw 9 rotated; as the mass emerges from each nozzle 8 it is heated and rendered rigid by the heater 30, and, by engagement with the collar 26, causes each lead core to be progressively covered.
