Conical mills; hollow cylinder and internal guided roller.-In a coffee mill of the kind in which, in the event of a hard foreign body coming between the grinding-bodies, the normally stationary outer grinding-body is coupled by the hard body to the inner grinding-body and thus rotates therewith to prevent damage to the teeth of the grinding-bodies, part of the outer grinding- body at or near the point where the coffee beans are introduced into the space between the two grinding-bodies is movable relatively to the remaining part of the outer grinding-body and the mill casing is provided with an opening to receive the movable part and through which the hard body is thrown out. As shown, the annular grinding-body 5 is secured in a cylindrical carrier 6 mounted in the mill casing 7 so that it can be rotated therein although it is normally held stationary by two spring-pressed studs 8. and a shutter or flap 10 carrying a separate part 13 of the annulus 5 is pivoted at 11 to the carrier 6. By means of a screw 12, the shutter 10 can be adjusted towards or from the runner 4 to regulate the supply of coffee beans to the mill. When the members 4, 6 rotate together and the shutter 10 comes opposite an opening 14 in the lower part of the mill casing 7, the shutter falls down into this opening and the hard foreign body is thrown into a drawer 15 below the casing, the rotor 4 continuing its movement while the carrier 6 is stopped. By inserting a pin &c. through a slot 17 in the casing 7 into one or other of a circumferential series of recesses 16 in the carrier 6 the parts 5, 6, 10. 13 may be returned to their original position while the mill is still running. A circumferential groove 18 in the carrier 6 ensures that the adjusting-screw 12 does not prevent the carrier from rotating. A spring may be provided to open the shutter when it comes opposite the opening 14.
