Universal joints.-The arms d', d<2> of the forks c<1>, c<2> of a Hooke's joint are parallel to the shafts and engage longitudinal slots in cylindrical bearing-pieces b<1>, b<2>, which are inserted radially from outside into bored recesses a<1>, a<2> in the arms of the cross-member a, these arms being provided, either on both sides or, as shown, alternately on either side. with somewhat wider slots a<3>. The fork arms d<1>, d<2> and slots in the pieces b<1>, b<2> are of rectangular section, the slots being open-topped, in order to section, the slots being open-topped, in order to facilitate simultaneous machining of a number of parts.
