277,683. Akt.-Ges. f³r Wasserdichte Stoffe Filmos Oftringen. Sept. 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Printing processes. - Paper, leather, textile fabric, or other sheet material for covering walls, book-covers, cardboard articles, &c. is printed by means of a smooth roller on which colour in the form of a relief pattern is taken up from a second smooth roller closely adjacent to but out of contact with the first roller and supplied with colour of a suitable consistency. The web 21, Fig. 1, is drawn from a roll 22 by a spiked roller 19 and passes in contact with the lower roller 7 of a pair of smooth rollers 7, 11 positively driven and spaced apart to a variable extent by adjusting screws 12. Colour passes from the container 14 between the two rollers and assumes the form of relief patterns on the rollers, such as ribs b, Fig. 2, projecting from a ground coating a. By varying the distance apart of the rollers and the consistency of the colour, various patterns may be produced. The ribs b, either alone or with the ground a, are transferred to the web 21 and by suitably adjusting the pressure different effects on the web are produced. The pattern may also be varied by rotating the rollers in opposite directions, or at different speeds or by axially displacing one of the rollers during its rotation. The printed web may be calendered. A second web may be printed by means of the roller 11.
