Cables, processes for making.-A process for impregnating insulating materials intended for electrical purposes, particularly the insulating material of electric cables, with insulating impregnating compounds such as oils consists in first replacing the air in the insulating material by a gas which is soluble in the impregnating compound, expelling the gas from the material and then introducing the impregnating material. The gas used may be carbon dioxide, propane, or acetylene. The material to be, impregnated is first dried, and the air exhausted therefrom as completely as possible by treatment in vacuum apparatus. The dry gas is then introduced, and the vacuum treatment repeated. Treatment with gas and exhaustion of the same may be repeated if desired, and the impregnating material, for instance oil, is then introduced at a suitable temperature, after having been previously freed from gas or gases by heating in a vacuum. The residual gas in the material is dissolved by the oil, and complete impregnation is effected.
