Abstract

Cut-out arrangements; electromagnetic switches. - In overload relays of the kind in which the action due to the current is opposed by the voltage of the circuit so that at normal voltages a heavy current is necessary to operate the relay, in order to obtain more reliable action particularly with two-phase and three-phase short-circuits the voltage coil is connected in series with an easily saturated ironcored inductance d, Fig. 3. By these means a proportionally smaller and substantially constant current is caused to traverse the voltage coil at low voltages up to 50 per cent of normal, and a proportionally larger and varying current at high voltages up to normal as indicated in Fig. 2 where the curve II represents the characteristics of the relay according to the invention and curve I represents the characteristics of the usual relay of this type. In the three-phase arrangement shown in Fig. 3, three balance-beam relays according to the invention are shown for protecting a three-phase line.
