Abstract

276,514. Lioud, F. Sept. 23, 1926, Addition to 223,899 and 258.866. Spray carburettors.-The carburettor claimed in the parent Specification as modified according to Specification 258,866 is further modified by (a) placing the throat of the air conduit 14 adja.- cent the atomizer, (b) causing all the air through the tube 12 to pass through and atomize the petrol or other fuel by inserting between the tubes 11, 12 a perforated bell with closed upper end, (c) replacing the calibrated orifice for the water or heavy fuel by a needle-controlled aperture, and (d) providing a needle valve to cut, off the water or heavy fuel when the throttle is at or near its closed position, thus dispensing with the necessity of a float chamber. The throat of the air conduit 14, Fig. 1, is adjacent the atomizer in which a bell 33 with apertures 34 in its wall is inserted between the tubes 11, 12, petrol being supplied to the space 5 and water or heavy fuel to space 10. With increasing suction the petrol level falls and more air enters thus reducing the petrol flow. The float chambers 1, 2, Fig. 2, for water or heavy fuel, and petrol respectively, communicate with the atomizer by conduits 3, 7, the conduit 7 having a calibrated orifice 8 whilst the water conduit has an aperture 44 controlled by a spring-loaded needle valve 38 which may be actuated manually or by barometric or thermostatic means. In the modification, Fig. 7, the water or heavy-fuel float chamber is dispensed with, the fluid being admitted directly to the conduit 46 with which a valve 51. normally kept open by a spring 50, co-operates. The upper part of the valve slides in a bush 54 which presses against a collar on the needle valve through a spring 55. When the throttle is at or near its closed position an arm 52 on the spindle thereof depresses the bush and valve and cuts off the liquid. With the elastic linkage described, movement of the throttle may be continued after the valve 51 is closed. In a further modification, the arm 52 is elastically connected to the throttle spindle through a coiled spring and bears directly on the needle valve. The arm 52 may be adjusted to vary the moment of closing.
