Abstract

276,428. Jennings, I. C. May 26, 1926. Lathes.-In a metal-cutting machine-tool for boring non-circular holes having a revolving work-holder and a cross-rail upon which a toolcarriage slides loosely, the latter is provided with an attachment which engages a cam secured to the work in order to control the position of the tool as the work rotates. As applied to a boring- mill, the work W is secured to the rotary table A and the cross-slide D, which carries a tool-ram E and is freely slidable on a rail C, is provided with a bracket 10 carrying a slide 11 on which is mounted a roller 15 engaging an annular cam 21 secured to the work. In operation the top of the work is first faced and bored and then a flange 18 having a part 19 accurately fitting the bore of the work is secured by bolts 20, the cam 21 being attached to the flange 18 by screws 22. The roller 15, which is preferably mounted by a ball-race on a pin 16, is maintained in contact with the cam as the work rotates by a spring 23, and the ram is fed downwards by the usual feedgear. The depth of cut is adjusted by a handwheel 14 actuating a screw 13 which engages a nut 12 on the roller carrying slide 11. Rigidity of the device is assured by having the points of contact between the roller and the cam and between the tool and work, both on the same side of the centre of rotation, and both in direct opposition to each other.
