Cutting-Machines.-An interchangeable cutter unit for biscuit machines adapted to be connected to and reciprocated by a crosshead comprises a cutter head, an embosser head and a stripper plate, together with means permitting relative movement of the cutter head and stripper plate, means tending to move the embosser head upwardly relatively to the cutter head and stripper plate, and means for limiting the upward movement. The cutter head is secured to a cutter cross-head operated by crank mechanism, the embossers being operated indirectly through presser feet carried by a second crosshead, the arrangement being such that the embossers engage the dough in advance of the cutters and are cleared by the cutters which, on return, are cleared by the embossers. Cutters 1, Fig. 1, are secured to a cutter head 10 from which is suspended by spring-encircled bolts 21 the stripper plate 20. Embossers 2 are secured to a head 30 guided within flanges of the head 10 and supported upon springs 36 encircling bolts 35 secured to the stripper. The unit is secured by bolts 15 to a cutter crosshead 16 reciprocated on guides 17 through rods 18. A second cross-head 44, reciprocated along the guides 17 through rods 45, carries presser feet 41 upon rods 42 which pass through the head 16 and are adjustable by screw- and-nut mechanism 46, 47, 48. The feet 41 are adapted to engage flanged portions of the head 30. A comparatively long stroke is imparted to the heads 16, 44 to ensure a quick embossing and cutting action. To co-operate with a continuouslymoving dough sheet, the cutter mechanism is supported by frames 84, Fig. 12, pivoting about a shaft 16a operating the cutters &c. the frames being rocked through links 97, 92 and levers 94, 95 by a crank 89 on a shaft 87 driven from the shaft 16<a> through gears 85, 86, the shaft 87 being also carried by an arm 90 which is oscillated through lever mechanism 100-104 by an eccentric 99 on the shaft 16a.
