Abstract

479,365. Perforating machines for leather &c. TUBULAR PERFORATING & MACHINERY CO.. Inc. Aug. 19, 1936. No. 22831. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1935. [Class 31 (ii)] In a perforating-machine for leather or similar material, having a vertically reciprocatory die, means for holding the material stationary during operative movement of the die, means independent of the die for feeding the material forward step by step during inactive movements of the die and a plurality of punches in the die, the die comprises a relatively long and narrow die head arranged transversely with respect to the direction of feed of the material and forming a portion only of a design which is completed by the intermittent feeding of the material and the successive strokes of the die. A shoe upper 184 together with a backing strip 74 is fed through the machine by intermittently rotated rolls 84, 86, 88, 90, Fig. 3, suitably geared together. The roll 88 is driven through a ball clutch by a lever 142, Fig. 1, rocked against a spring 148 by a cam 154 and coupled by a rod 138 to an arm 134, a brake band 166 being provided to ensure against reverse movement. The movements of the lever 142 are controlled by an adjustable stop 144. The upper rolls 84, 90 are mounted on levers 104, 106 which are adapted to be moved downwards by hand-operated toggle arrangements 114, 120, each including a spring 124. The punches 230, Fig. 3, are secured to an elongated hollow member 226 to which suction is applied to remove the punchings and which is carried by a vertically reciprocating- head 42. The head 42 is supported in an upper cross-head 30 by eccentrics 38 on a rod 40 which can be rotated manually to adjust the height of the punches ; the head 30 is coupled by rods 32 to a lower head 28 reciprocated by a crank pin 16 on a shaft 12 through a link 18 and lever 20. The head 30 is urged upwards by springs 68. The bedplate 176, Fig. 6, which has an upper surface 180 of babbit metal, brass, fibre board or wood, has slidably mounted on it by pins 194 and slots, combined presser and stripper members 186. 188 which are operated by lever arms 200 on shafts 208 engaging between lugs 196 and abutments 202. The shafts 208 carry also arms 212, Fig. 3, pulled together by a spring 214 and arms 216 which co-operate with cams 220, 222 on the shaft 156 whereby the members 186, 188 are depressed against the action of the spring 214 to clamp the work. A further strip of material 75 may be fed over the work or may comprise the work to be operated upon.
