To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J.BAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Machine for Forming Metallic Strips, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which will produce stripssuch as are used in themanufacture of toy tennis rackets, etc. I
Another object of my invention isto provide a simple and eflicient device for the purpose stated,

One end of the shaft carries a bevel'gear 29, and the other end of the shaft carries a collar 18 and a pin 19 whereby separation of the shaft and the v v blocks is precluded. A guide plate is mounted upon the forward faces of the blocks 13' and 14, and carries a closure plate 30 upon its lower face. The guide plate 20 and the closure plate 30 have formed in them registering grooves whereby a way 21 is formed between them. The way .21 extends longitudinally of the blocks 13 and 14 and registers with the way 27. The cross section of the groove formed in the closure plate isof a size substantially equal tov the cross section of the band 220 which is to he formed in this machine, and the cross section of the groove in the guideplate 20 is substantially equal to the cross section of the filler strips 230 WlllCll'fLI'Q .to be secured upon the band 220 in order to provide the strip 240. The lower wall of the groove in the closure plate extends tangential to the uppermost portion of the depressed central portion of the roller 15, and the distance between the flanges 24 and 28 formed on the roller is substantially equal to the width of the band 220 before the edges ofthe bandhave been turned inwardlyupon themselves as shown in Fig.6. a
The shouldersv22 and 2.3 are equal in width. The upper ends of the blocks 13 and 14 have U shaped ways 31 formed in them, in which ways are reciprocally mount- .ed the-bearing blocks 32 and 33 carrying the shaft 26 on which; is mounted a roller 25. Springs'34 and 35 yieldingly support the bearings 82' and 33 in the ways 31. The roller 25-has a flanged central portion 36 of a width such that by cooperating with the lower roller 15, the band 220 together with the filler 230 is retained in the depressed portion 17 of the roller 15, and the edges of the band 220 are turned upwardly.
Head blocks 37 and 38 are mounted upon rocally mounted. The bearingblocks 48 and 49 have slots 39 and 40 formed in them thru which reciprocally extend pins 41 and 42, thelower ends of which pins engage the bearing blocks 32and 33, and the upper ends of which pins engage the cams 43 and 44 carried by a cam shaft 45 mounted on the which engage the bearing blocks 48 and 49 whereby the pressure on the springs 34 and 35 may be varied. Immediately to the rear of the rolls 15 and 25, are disposed a pair of rolls 54 and 55, the rolls being spaced above the lower surface of the way 21, at a distance substantially equal to the thickness thru the finished strip 240 at its thickest point. The rolls 15 and are'mounted on horizontal shafts, and the axes of the rolls 54 and 55 are vertical. The'way 21 in the guide plate registers with a way 56 eX-- tending between the rolls 54 and 55 and between the plate 57 mounted on the bed 58 extending rearwardly from the rolls 54 and 55. After the edges of the band have been turned upwardly by rolls 15 and 25, the band 220 and the filler 230 carried thereby pass to the rolls 54 and 55, and as the band and filler pass between the rolls 54 and 55, the
upwardly extending edges are turned inwardly over the filler, asshown in -'Fig. 7. The strip with the inturned edges then passes into the Way 56, a springguide 59 mounted on the plate 57 serving to direct the strip into. the way 56. As the strip passes thru the way 56, the .dies 60 carried by the plunger 11 perforate the strip. The
plate .57 and the bed 58 have suitable reshafts whereby to actuate the cams.
cesses 61 which co-operate with the punches in providing shearing or cutting edges against which the dies 60 may operate; As the, strip leaves the way 56, it passes between a pair of rolls 62 and 63, which further compress the strip, and also help in feeding the strip thru the way 56. The rolls 62 and 63 are mounted upon blocks 64 and 65, substantially similar to the blocks l3 and 14, the roll 62 being carried by the shaft 66 mounted 011 blocks 67 and 68, which blocks are reciprocally mounted in ways 69 and 70, formed in the blocks 64 and 65. The head blocks 71 and 72, mounted on the blocks 64 and 65, carry reciprocating bearing blocks 73 and 74, the blocks 73 and 74, carrying a eam shaft 75, upon which are mounted cams '76 and 77, adapted to operate on pins 78 and 79, whereby to vary the tension of the adapted to enter between the flanges 83 and 84, and to compress the strip as it works upon such strip. A deflector bar 86 is mounted at: the rear end of the device, and
serves to direct the strip downwardly after it leaves the rollers 62 and 63. The roller 63 is mounted on a shaft 87, carrying at one end a bevel gear 88, and at its other end a collar 89 and a pin 90.
A shaft 91 mounted adjacent the bed 58, carries bevel gears 92 and 93, which engage bevel gears 88 and 29, respectively. An intermittent rotatory motion is imparted to the shaft 91 by means of an eccentric comprising a rod 94 having its upper end pivotally mounted on the drive shaft 95 and carrying a pawl 96 at its lower end, the pawl being adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 97, carried by the bevel gear 93. The drive shaft 95 is employed to intermittently actuate the plunger 11, as is common in punch presses, and the parts hear such relation that the shaft 91, is actuated at times other than when the dies 60 and 61' are working on the strip, in this way providing an intermittent feed of the strip, the strip being punched during those periods when it is stationary.
The operation of my device is as follows b r Power is transmitted to the drive shaft 95 from any suitable source, and as is common in punch presses, and the motion of the drive shaft is translated into a reciprocating motion of the plunger 11. The eccentric operated by the drive shaft 95, intermittingly actuates the shaft 91, in' a given direction, this direction being determined by the ratchet mechanism mounted upon the shaft 91. The intermitting motion of shaft 91, causes an intermitting feed of the band 220 between the pairs of rollers 25 and 15, and 62 and 63, thereby intermittingly feeding the band 220 and the filler 230 thru the way 56, and as the strip 240 passes thru the way 56, the dies 60 perforate the strip.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described the strip upon a filler carried by the strip, means 7 to feed the strip and filler thru the first two mentioned mechanisms, and means to perforate the filler and strip.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a die having a way therethru, means to intermittingly feed a strip of material thru the way, a complementary die adapted to perforate the strip as it passes thru the way, means at one end of the die adapted to turn the edges of the strip inwardly upon itself, and means at the other end of the die adapted to clamp the edges of the strip upon a filler carried by the stu 3. In a device of the class described t e combination of a pair of rolls adapted to feed a metallic band and a filler between themselves and to turn the edges of the band at an angle to the intermediate portion of the band, a second pair of rollers adapted to turn the angularly extending edges of the strip over the filler, a die adapted to perforate the filler and theband, and means to clamp the overturned edges of the strip upon the filler.
4. In a device of the class described the combination of a pair of rolls adapted to feed a metallic band and a filler between themselves and to turn the edges of the band at an angle to the intermediate portion of the band, a second pair of rollers adapted to turn the angularly extending edges of the band over the filler, a die adapted to perforate the filler and the band, and a third pair of rollers adapted to compress the band and filler whereby the edges of the band are clamped upon the filler.
5. In a device of the class described the combination of a pair of rolls adapted to feed a metallic band and a filler between themselves and to' turn the edges of the band at an angle to the intermediate portion of the band, a second pair of rollers adapted to turn the angularly extending edges of the band over the filler, a die adapted to perforate the filler and the band, a third pair of rollers adapted to compress the band and filler whereby the edges of the band are clamped upon the filler, and means to intermittingly feed the strip between the rolls and the die.
